How chikankari is made
Every piece goes through the same three steps, in Lucknow, by hand.
Block printing
The design is stamped onto the fabric with carved wooden blocks and a dye that washes out later.
Hand embroidery
Karigars stitch over the printed lines by hand, using stitches like tepchi, bakhiya, phanda and murri.
Washing and finishing
The piece is washed to remove the print, then starched, pressed and checked before it is packed.

Hand embroidery
Stretched on a small hoop, every printed line is stitched over by hand: tepchi, bakhiya, phanda, murri and jaali.

Washed and finished
The piece is washed to lift away the print, leaving only the thread. Then starched, pressed and checked before it reaches you.

Lucknowi Weaves is mom-owned and homegrown. We work with chikankari karigars in Lucknow and bring their work to you, from the kurti you wear to office to the set you save for Navratri.
We started on Instagram, and that is still where most of our customers talk to us, with a real person on the other side.
